My work with the Wales rugby union team a few years ago was a memorable experience for lots of positive reasons. However, news on Monday of Gavin Henson’s sacking by the Cardiff Blues triggered a memory that I would not describe as a highlight.
To be blunt, I was not surprised at Henson’s demise. I have followed his career with close interest because I hoped that the young kid I knew who had so much talent but didn’t know what to do with it would eventually come to terms with being under the spotlight.
Sadly, the focus has become less on Henson’s amazing ability and talent and increasingly on his off-field pursuits and antics. Here is a classic case of a performer who has lacked Superior Performance Intelligence, that essential knowhow underpinning getting to the top of your profession and, more importantly, staying there.
